Viva “vooruitgang” in Suid Afrika in trurat! Veilig? Bepaald nie!

CAPE TOWN - Cape Town has had the unfortunate honour of being labelled the murder capital of the country.

The 2017 State of Urban Safety Report paints a bleak picture of violent crime in the Mother City.

The report analyses the state of crime and violence in South Africa’s major cities. Its second edition will be officially released in Johannesburg later on Wednesday.

The report reveals the number of murders in South Africa has declined significantly since 1994 and 1995.

But this country’s murder rate is still among the highest in the world, more than five times the global average and four South African cities are named among the top 50 most violent cities in the world.

The latest research shows South Africa’s murder rate is trending up again. It’s climbed for the fourth year in a row. In 2015/16 over 3,000 more murders were recorded than in 2011/12.

Breaking down the numbers, the murder rates in Gauteng’s three metros, Johannesburg, Ekurhuleni and Tshwane, have remained below the national average. It’s a different story in Cape Town, where the number of murders was double that of other cities in 2015/16.

The report suggests that alcohol and access to drugs are likely to be two of the major drivers of that trend.
