Panyaza Lesufi

Hiervan is Panyaza Lesufi ‘n uitmuntende voorbeeld!

JOHANNESBURG – As the Gauteng Department of Education (GDE) works to create more integrated schooling environments, calls have been made for the South African Schools Act to be amended.

Last week the department held a summit to discuss education policies affecting social cohesion.

Recommendations have since been tabled by members of civil society, School Governing Body (SGBs), associations and education experts.

One of the proposed amendments involves the powers of SGB, which the summit says should be reviewed

Calls have been made to do away with the practice of SGBs using language as a means of restricting the admission of some pupils.

“The summit was of the view that because the demographics around the schools have changed, they recommend that the South African Schools Act needs to be changed to accommodate this change, and that it must be clear who has the right to deal with the issue of the language.”

Language and admission policies have been highlighted as key areas of concern affecting integration at schools.

At the same time, GDE MEC Panyaza Lesufi said his department will continue to fight non-racial environments at schools.

Lesfufi says the current state of schooling environments are still highly segregated.

Last weekend the department held a summit attended by members of civil society, political parties, school governing bodies, associations and religious groups.

Recommendations have been made for the powers of school governing bodies to be amended, to bring an end to discriminatory language and admissions criteria.
